Kathmandu isn’t just about temples and mountains – the street food here is super tasty, fun to try, and really affordable! Most of these snacks cost just around NPR 50 to 150 (that’s less than £1 or ₹100). Whether you’re hungry for spicy, sweet, or crispy food, the streets of Kathmandu will provide everything.

 

Here are some yummy foods you should try:

1. Momo (Dumplings)

In Nepali Momo but in chinese and other languages they are also called dumplings. Dumplings filled with meat or vegetables and served with spicy sauce. You can get them steamed, fried, or even jhol (in soup). They are among healthy foods in Nepal because they are steamed rather than oil fried.
You can find it on New Road, Bhaktapur, or any street stall

 


 

2. Chatamari (Nepali Pizza)

Exactly like pizza. A thin rice pancake topped with egg, meat, and veggies. Crunchy and full of flavor!
You can find it on Patan or local Newari food stalls. Some famous Restaurant for testing chatamari are sa:sa restaurant situated in Kirtipur, Nepal. Its almost 15-20 minutes from the valley Ringroad.

 


3. Sekuwa (BBQ Meat)

Grilled meat cooked over fire – spicy, smoky, and juicy! Usually made from chicken, pork, or buffalo. They are available everywhere even in Thamel. Cooked especially in the evening.
You can find it on Sukedhara or Bhatbhateni street stalls

 


4. Pani Puri

Crunchy balls filled with spicy water, potato, and chickpeas. Eat it in one bite – it’s spicy, sour, and fun!

5. Sel Roti (Rice Doughnut)

A round, sweet fried bread made from rice. It’s crispy outside and soft inside – great with tea.
You can find it on Kalimati market in the morning

 


6. Laphing

Cold, spicy noodles made from mung beans. A Tibetan dish that’s become super popular in Kathmandu!
You can find it on Boudha area

 


7. Samosa Chat

A mashed-up samosa with spicy, sweet, and tangy sauces. Messy but delicious!
You can find it on Baneshwor street food stalls

 


8. Juju Dhau (King Curd)

Thick, sweet yogurt in a clay pot. A must-try dessert from Bhaktapur!
You can find it on Bhaktapur Durbar Square

 


9. Chhoila

Spicy grilled meat (buffalo or chicken) mixed with mustard oil and spices. Usually eaten with flattened rice (chiura).
You can find it on Kirtipur or local Newari eateries

 


 

10. Thukpa (Noodle Soup)

A warm noodle soup with meat or veggies – perfect on cold days.
You can find it on Boudha or Swoyambhu area

 


11. Aloo Chop (Potato Fritters)

Mashed potato balls deep-fried and served hot with chutney. Great for a quick bite!
You can find it on Chabahil or Lagankhel roadside

 


12. Masala Chiya (Spiced Tea)

Hot Nepali tea made with milk and spices like cardamom and ginger. Perfect with any snack!
